Most everything in life has it’s seasons. In fact life itself has seasons. I discovered by doing, that running my business also has its seasons. In February and August it is the sale season. Those months I have done the New York Now gift show and following the show I need to get everything ready and shipped out to the stores. When all that is done, I need to start working on my new collections and I move into a new season. Which I honestly find a lot more fun.
Throughout the year I constantly come up with new ideas for bags (and I also get a lot of suggestions from my blog readers and friends on bags I should make – thank you everyone!!), but I don’t really get to work on them until after the administration phase.
I am very “hands-on” in the creative process. I sew sample bags myself. I draw patterns with Sharpies on fabric. I draw the prints for my Travel Collection straight on to the bags to see where it should be located and how big it should be.
This is the sketch for the Lingerie bag.
My samples are very crude and I am definitely not a professional seamstress. Also, I don’t have professional machines like an overlock sewing machine. So when I need more professional samples I go to the Garment District here in New York. This place may seam like a little bit of a mad-house when you first step foot there. But really they are very organised and do great work. I have noticed that Rag&Bone makes samples in the same studio as where I make my bags.
My next project will be to add on to the Christmas Collection. My Graphic Christmas Collection did great last year and I have so many great plans for the one to come. I am so excited about getting started on this!! Creating stuff is what I love the most and my dream for the future is to be able to do only that!
When we have an order here New York City, Micke and I like to deliver the bags ourselves. It’s nice to have a look at the store and meet the people in the shop. The most eco-friendly way of transporting goods is of course on the subway so this is what Micke and I will do. I am lucky to have a strong hubby to help me carry the boxes.
This image is from our first delivery ever in New York. It was this Japanese company, with an office on Broadway and Houston, that had bought my bags at my first gift show. I had been so worried all summer long thinking maybe no one would place an order on my bags at the show. I had no idea if this was going to fly. After all the concept of wrapping gifts in reusable fabric bags is quite new and not everyone understands. I was SO relieved when the first order was placed. It was such a rush thinking that YES – maybe my idea would work and the thought of “reuse” could spread!
So, this subway ride from Upper West Side to downtown I will never forget!
Now we are sort of used to it, but still enjoy it as much!
By the way, todays Dailylove.com talks about doing things despite your fear. I can totally relate!
”I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing.”
- Ashton Kutcher
”The best piece of advice someone has ever given me was ‘do it scared.’ And no matter if you’re scared, just go ahead and do it anyway because you might as well do it scared, so it will get done and you will feel so much better if you step out of your comfort zone.”
- Sherri Shepherd
“The future is completely open, and we are writing it moment to moment.”
- Pema Chodron
